Actor, Director, Writer. Before the age of 30, this Mexican Renaissance man had already enjoyed stints as a grape picker, commercial sailor, radio deejay, film composer and TV-commercial director. Realizing directing was his true calling but eager to apply his skills to a more meaningful format, Iñárritu inevitably turned to movies. After meeting novelist Guillermo Arriaga, the fellow countrymen entered into a fertile friendship that produced three brilliant silver screen collaborations — Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel— which featured complex narratives involving multiple interconnected stories and disparate characters brought together through tragedy. Although Iñárritu and Arriaga initially discussed creating 11 shorts exploring life in Mexico City, they opted instead to make their first feature, 2000's Amores Perros, which comprised three intersecting tales that resolved with a car crash. The film won myriad international accolades and was an art-house hit stateside, garnering Golden Globe and Academy Award nods for best foreign film. Iñárritu helmed two stylish shorts, The Hire: Powder Keg, which, in a flashback to his ad days was part of a series produced by BMW, and a segment in the anthology film 11'09''01: September 11, before tackling his first English-language film, 21 Grams (2003). Similar in theme, tone and structure to Amores Perros, his second feature boasted big actors — Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio Del Toro — delivering big, award-nominated performances, and solidified Iñárritu as an up-and-coming auteur. 2006's Babel, which was in keeping with his previous efforts except here the drama played out on three different continents, finally earned Iñárritu an Oscar nod as director, as well as a best-picture nod as producer. Sadly, Iñárritu and Arriaga publicly disagreed about how much each of them contributed to the success of their movies. Iñárritu reportedly went so far as to forbid Arriaga from attending the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, where he was named best director. Although the fruitful relationship came to a nasty end, Iñárritu rebounded from the split by forming a creative alliance with acclaimed Mexican directors Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro, The three directors created the innovative production company Cha Cha Cha Films and released Rudo y Cursi, a film starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna as a pair of soccer-playing brothers recruited to compete in a Mexican league. Rudo y Cursi quickly became one of Mexico's highest-grossing films, and Cha Cha Cha next produced 2010's Biutiful, Iñárritu's Spanish-language drama with Javier Bardem in the lead role of a man dying of cancer. Iñárritu premiered the somber Biutiful at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival to mixed reactions from critics, but he scored a more universally accepted hit and widespread appeal when he directed a stirring three-minute Nike ad for the 2010 World Cup. 8/15/1963 (56 years old) Mexico City, Mexico. Alejandro González Iñárritu.
